SAN DIEGO (AP) — Houston safety Ed Reed won’t play in the Texans’ season opener at San Diego.

Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te’o also was inactive Monday night when San Diego hosted the Texans in the final game of the NFL’s opening week.

Reed worked out on the field at Qualcomm Stadium before the game, but the Texans elected to hold out the nine-time Pro Bowler. The 34-year-old former Baltimore star signed with Houston in the offseason, but didn’t participate in offseason activities or training camp after hip surgery in April.

Te’o has a sprained right foot. The former Notre Dame linebacker hasn’t practiced since getting hurt in the Chargers’ preseason opener, and was ruled out for the opener two days ago.
