LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Brandon Meriweather’s groin injury has kept him out of the Washington Redskins’ opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The oft-injured safety is listed as inactive for Monday night’s game.

Meriweather played in only one game last year, when he sprained his left knee in preseason and then tore the ACL in his right knee in midseason. His knee had recovered enough for him to play in the final preseason game two weeks ago, but he hurt his groin in practice last week.

The Redskins are counting on Meriweather to steady a secondary that ranked 30th against the pass in 2012 and is relying heavily on rookies Bacarri Rambo and David Amerson.

Rambo and Reed Doughty are listed as the starting safeties for Monday’s game.
