INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis 500 champion Tony Kanaan confirmed he talked with NASCAR team Joe Gibbs Racing as he contemplates his future — one that could be outside of IndyCar.

Kanaan was one of six IndyCar drivers participating in a Firestone tire test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday. Testing continues Wednesday.

Kanaan’s contract with KV Racing ends this year and, despite attempts to find a ride in IndyCar, doesn’t have a deal for 2014. Kanaan says he wants to stay in the IndyCar series, but since he’s a free agent at the end of the season, he’s looking at every opportunity.

Along with IndyCar and NASCAR, he’s looked at options in the Grand-AM Series and stock car racing in Brazil.
