TUMWATER — Tumwater police say an officer was hit multiple times in the head with a hammer Monday night when he attempted to arrest a suspect at an apartment. The officer was treated and released at an Olympia hospital.

The 23-year-old suspect surrendered and was jailed for investigation of assault as well as an outstanding arrest warrant.

Police say the officer went to the apartment looking for a runaway and the 23-year-old. While the officer talked with the renter, the suspect climbed out a bathroom window near the door and attacked the officer.

Three other people in the apartment were arrested on warrants. The runaway was returned to a guardian.
