Vancouver is one of eight cities in Washington that will have a team in a new statewide adult men’s soccer league.

The Evergreen Premier League of Washington will begin play in 2014, with the 14-game regular season running May to July. Teams will feature college and older players. Players will retain amateur status.

The nickname and the home field for the Vancouver team have not yet been announced. Barrett Goddard of Vancouver is the owner of the Vancouver club.

The new league will be affiliated with the Washington Adult Soccer Association, US Adult Soccer and FIFA.

Other cities with teams confirmed for the 2014 are Bellingham, Tacoma, Seattle, Wenatchee, Silverdale, Pasco, and Spokane.

Cardinals slate baseball tryout

The Vancouver Cardinals will hold tryouts for their 2014 teams at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Hudson’s Bay High School.

Players who are in high school through the spring of 2014 are eligible to play. The Cardinals play an independent schedule of 55-60 games each summer around the Northwest, and is host team for the annual Curt Daniels Invitational.

Players should bring their baseball gear to the tryout.

Youth lacrosse options expand

To introduce the sport to new players, Vancouver Youth Lacrosse is staging a free clinic from 2-3 p.m. on Sunday at Eisenhower Elementary School. Beginning on Sept. 22, the league will hold clinics on six Sundays from 2-3 p.m. for new players and from 3-4 p.m. for more experienced players.

The new-player clinics will be stick only and cost $50. The returning-player clinic requires participants to have full lacrosse gear.
