BERLIN (AP) — World-record holder Patrick Makau of Kenya has withdrawn from the Berlin Marathon because of inflammation in his left knee.

Makau set the world record of 2 hours, 3 minutes, 38 seconds in Berlin in 2011 and wanted to try to lower it this year. But he says “now the first thing on my mind is to fully recover from this injury so I can return to training.”

Makau also won the Berlin Marathon in 2010.

About 40,000 runners are entered in the Sept. 29 race.
