SOUP AND BREAD DISCUSSIONS
return 6-8 p.m. at Camas Friends Church, 1004 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas. Meetings will begin with a simple meal and fellowship, followed by a time of focused teaching and discussion in the church community room. Discussion topics will come from the workbook, “Healthy Children, Healthy Planet,” assembled by the Northwest Earth Institute. The free series continues through Nov. 13. 360-834-2446.

HIGHLAND LUTHERAN CHURCH will celebrate its 130th anniversary with a 10 a.m. Sept. 22nd outdoor service, followed by a potluck picnic. The church was founded by 11 Scandinavian and four German families who took turns using the church because of language differences. The original church is still used but a new chapel and classrooms were built on adjacent land in 1959. Additional classrooms were built in 1968. The Rev. Erik Niemi will speak at the service at the church, 38809 N.E. 41st Ave., La Center. 360-263-2302.

ST. ANDREW LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5607 N.E. Gher Road, Vancouver, will recognize Carolyn White at the 11 a.m. worship service Sept. 22. White has taught at the church preschool for 26 years. There will be a celebration following the service. 360-892-7160, http://www.salcvan.org

WEEKEND RETREAT: Orchards United Methodist Church, 11000 N.E. Fourth Plain Road, Vancouver, is hosting Sister Teresa Jackson, a member of the Monastery of St. Gertrude in Cottonwood, Idaho, for a weekend retreat Sept. 27 and 28. She will lecture and give workshops on Benedictine spirituality and practices. The free event is from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and held at the church. THE GROTTO, Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, Portland, celebrates two anniversaries. An outdoor Mass is scheduled for noon to celebrate The Grotto’s 89th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Ordination to the Priesthood of the Rev. Jack Topper, executive director of The Grotto. The Rev. Ambrose Mayer purchased land on the north side of Rocky Butte from the Union Pacific Railroad company and turned it into a Catholic shrine. The Grotto was dedicated in 1924. It is now a 62-acre botanical garden and sanctuary, open to the public 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.
