INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Colts tight end Dwayne Allen will miss the rest of the season with a hip injury.

Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano made the announcement on Wednesday. The Colts had hoped Allen would heal with rest, but doctors say surgery is required.

Allen caught a touchdown pass in the season-opening win against Oakland, but was inactive for last Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. Coby Fleener will have an expanded role in replacing Allen.

The Colts already have lost starting running back Vick Ballard and starting left guard Donald Thomas to season-ending injuries. Ballard tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last week. Thomas has torn a quad tendon in his right leg.

Pagano says Thomas will have surgery on Thursday.
