The Steelhead Management Work Group will meet at 1 p.m. Friday at the Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2108 Grand Blvd., to continue the task of recommending of wild steelhead gene bank from among the Lewis or Washougal rivers.

This will be the third session of the volunteer group.

Last week, the group and state officials narrowed the choices to a winter steelhead gene bank in the East Fork Lewis, a summer steelhead gene bank in the East Fork Lewis, a summer steelhead gene bank in the Washougal or a combination from the three.

If a winter steelhead gene bank is created on the East Fork of the Lewis, releases of hatchery winter and summer steelhead would be discontinued.

If a summer steelhead gene bank is created on the East Fork of the Lewis, releases of hatchery summer steelhead would be discontinued.

If a summer steelhead gene bank is created on the Washougal, hatchery steelhead could continue to be released, but upstream of the weir at Washougal Hatchery would be managed for only wild fish.

The meetings are open to the public, but comment is limited to the end of the meeting.
