CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Denny Hamlin is trying a new treatment on his injured back in an effort to avoid offseason surgery.

He says he’s seen an improvement, but needs rest to determine if he’s making progress.

Hamlin had persistent back trouble before he suffered a compression fracture in a March accident that sidelined him for more than a month. He told The Associated Press he received injections about two weeks ago that have numbed his back and helped with the persistent pain.

Hamlin says the injections have made him feel better than he did before the March 24 crash.

He also says he still has not spoken to Joey Logano since the accident at California, but Logano attempted to call him shortly before the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship began.
