MIAMI (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says Erik Spoelstra and the Miami Heat are “basically done” finalizing the terms of a contract extension for the coach.

The person says Spoelstra’s future with the team was not in question, but the two-time defending NBA champions wanted to get a new deal done regardless. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the new contract has not been announced.

Yahoo Sports first reported the extension was near. Spoelstra has one year remaining on his existing contract.

Heat President Pat Riley said last season that the team had no intention of letting Spoelstra go, saying it was his hope that his one-time protege would be with the team “for a long, long time.”
