Students in grades four through 12 are invited by the Washington State Library to enter the national Letters About Literature contest, in which they can write a personal letter to their favorite author, living or dead.
In their letters, contestants must explain how the author’s work has shaped the contestant’s view of the world or how the contestant views herself or himself. At the state level, a $125 cash prize is up for grabs, as well as the ability to advance to the national competition. The first-place prize in the national contest is $1,000.
There are three age groups for the contest: Level one is for grades four through six (minimum age is 9 years old); level two is for grades seven and eight; level three is for grades nine through 12. Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 10 for students in grades nine through 12, and by Jan. 10 for students in grades four through eight.
