The Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council on Tuesday selected Camas City Councilor Melissa Smith as its new vice chair.

Smith will take over for Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart, who is expected to resign this month to become Ridgefield’s city manager.

County Commissioner Tom Mielke had also been nominated to become vice chair, but the board picked Smith by a 7-5 tally.

RTC board members pick a chair and vice chair among themselves each year. Typically the vice chair moves up to the chair’s position the following year.

The RTC board is currently chaired by Vancouver City Councilor Jack Burkman.
