I’ll raise my hand as being one who was none too thrilled about the Columbia River Crossing.
I believe that in a few years time, livability will dominate the discussion. As for me, I am not willing to place downtown Vancouver in danger for the sake of some far away interest moving stuff. And I will continue to fight for light rail.
Truly, I am at a loss. Build a concrete mountain for trucks? Pull mile after mile of dangerous oil trains along the riverfront? How does this directly improve the lives of the people who live and raise their families here? What is in it for the people who call this home?
It was a shame that Fort Vancouver, the very epicenter of settlement of the Great Northwest, was cut off from the river that was its “raison d’être.” It was a travesty for it to be cut off from the town that grew from its glory; all for the convenience of foreign commerce passing through … in a matter of minutes.
