PORTLAND — Oregon’s task force on genetically engineered agriculture has been formed and will meet for the first time this week.
The task force, convened by Gov. John Kitzhaber, will examine conflicts between growers of genetically-engineered products and other producers, including organic growers. It will also look into the issue of labeling GMO foods.
Last fall, Kitzhaber also directed the Oregon Department of Agriculture to map where genetically engineered and non-genetically engineered crops are grown. He also asked the department to submit a state action plan for dealing with genetically engineered crops.
The governor has said he plans to introduce legislation in 2015 to address the issue.
Task force members represent both conventional and organic farmers, among others. The task force will culminate with a report in the fall.
