Shumway — A kid living with his mom in a YWCA domestic violence shelter got a chance to smile on his birthday last week when he was given a sock monkey thanks to a recent donation of toys by iQ Credit Union. The local credit union gave many stuffed sock monkeys to the YWCA Clark County SafeChoice Domestic Violence Shelter to help give the children living there some comfort. “Shelters are a scary place for kids, and anything that brings them a little joy and makes them feel a little safer here is so important,” said Stephanie Barr, interim director of the SafeChoice Domestic Violence Program. The program lets families, whose names remain confidential, stay in one of the shelter’s 10 large rooms for 60 days to help them be safe.
