PORTLAND — On Monday, at 5:45 p.m., North Portland Precinct officers responded to the report of a chicken crossing Highway 30 in Linnton, north of the St. John’s Bridge.

The caller reported to the non-emergency line that the chicken was creating a traffic hazard along the highway.

Listen to audio of the 911 call.

Responding officers were unable to locate the chicken and, fortunately, there were no traffic crashes related to the unusual report.

While “chicken crossing road” jokes have been told for more than a century, animals in the roadway creating traffic hazards are no laughing matter.

If you see animals (or people) in or near the roadway potentially causing a traffic hazard in Portland, please call the police non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.
