They complain about Israel’s behavior bitterly, and they gripe about its perceived defiance of generally recognized humanitarian norms, but it is noteworthy that our esteemed president and his Cabinet sidekicks continue to send the usual huge amounts of money, munitions and assorted other goodies in Israel’s direction nonetheless.
The scene inside Gaza is marked by the sort of ever-escalating horrors to be expected from a modern army’s frenzied employment of high-tech firepower in one of the world’s most thickly populated territories. Israeli officials are increasingly the objects of war crime accusations. These accusations are, given what is so obviously taking place, decidedly difficult to refute.
Year after year, by far the largest recipient of U.S. foreign assistance is the state of Israel. A huge preponderance of this annual flow of state-to-state generosity is purely military in nature. Quite incredibly, given Israel’s utter defiance of the international community, the U.S. Congress rushes gargantuan aid appropriations for Israel through its various committees and procedural hurdles with staggering speed.
Even as the Israelis compile an ever-burgeoning list of human rights transgressions, our own government signals its chummy complicity by sending Jerusalem just about anything and everything it requests in terms of aid.
