I’m responding to Tom O’Neal’s Aug. 3 letter “Where has our pride gone,” concerning the deterioration of our city’s open spaces and medians. He is not the first person to address this problem in your newspaper nor will he probably not be the last. Numerous complaints have been printed, but the problem is: Where can you instill pride when there obviously is none?
The city of Vancouver would rather give numerous questionable raises to those in their favor and thumb their noses at we who pay our taxes, some of which should go for basic services like keeping the city presentable. The city seems to turn a deaf ear to the complaints that have been given. I guess they think that if they ignore our complaints that, given enough time, they will cease.
An analogy to me is when you allow a baby to cry long enough, she or he will sooner or later stop. The city hears our cries and assumes we will eventually stop and accept the lack of services as the new norm.
Are we just to be ignored and accept it? Does anyone have an answer to this problem?
