Letter: Rule out incumbency advantage

The Columbian
Published: August 29, 2014, 5:00pm

Here is yet another of my wacky ideas. Let’s have an initiative along the lines of no holders of elective office shall succeed themselves, but may not be limited to number of terms. This would have the following salubrious effects:

  1. It would eliminate the advantages of incumbency from elections. Politicians would have to run on their own time and dime, instead of that of the taxpayer.

  2. It would free up incumbents to spend much of their time serving their constituents.

  3. It would mitigate the abuses that go with seniority: too much power, too many perks, too much pork.

  • It might even, perhaps, improve voter turnout.

  • Don’t worry, politicians, if this isn’t illegal now, I have confidence you’ll fix that.
