SEATTLE — Two Washington teachers are on a short list for a $1 million international prize.
The two teachers on the short list of 16 U.S. teachers are Noah Zeichner of Chief Sealth International High School in Seattle and Jeff Charbonneau of Zillah High School.
Charbonneau was the 2013 national teacher of the year. The science teacher is also the STEM coordinator for multiple school districts in the state. He has won grants to acquire computer equipment for his school, including 3D printers.
Zeichner teaches global leadership, including topics like the political effects of climate change and food scarcity. He won two grants to expand the school’s Mariachi music program.
The winner of the Varkey GEMS Foundation Global Teacher prize will be announced on March 16. The top 10 finalists will be announced in February.
