LAKE STEVENS — Snohomish County sheriff’s investigators now say a 3-year-old boy seriously injured by a gunshot in the mouth shot himself last month. Officers originally thought a 4-year-old playmate might have accidentally fired the shot.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said Monday that investigators have confirmed the injured boy shot himself on Nov. 21 at his home in Lake Stevens, Washington. She says the case remains under investigation. The two children reportedly were playing in a bedroom when the 3-year-old’s father heard a loud noise.

The Daily Herald reports that the child, who was flown to a Seattle hospital for treatment of extensive injuries to his mouth and face, has since been released from the hospital.

Court records show the injured boy’s parents had argued about access to guns at their home.
