Weather Eye: Christmas miracle arrives in form of snow in the mountains

Nothing short of a Christmas miracle for the ski resorts. Early Wednesday morning, it was snowing heavily from Government Camp up to Timberline. Snowflakes were falling all the way down to Brightwood at 1,000 feet elevation. I had several reports of sticking snow with white-covered ground in our foothills to the east above 1,300 feet.

Thanks to a vigorous cold front, where most of the moisture was behind the front. Did you notice the quick drop in temperatures Tuesday evening? A chilly rain and a chunky rain in some places early Wednesday, even at low elevations. A few wet snowflakes on your windshield? Perhaps.

Today dries out, although a shower or two may be scattered about. It will be cool. Another cold front arrives Friday night and Saturday for another quick burst of snow in the mountains again. There could be a mix initially in lower elevations. The ski areas could get upward of 2 feet of snow by Saturday night. Rejoice! Finally, the snow season gets underway.

Forecast charts still show colder air flowing our way, although things dry out. East winds will temper our highs and will struggle to reach 40 degrees Sunday and early next week. We should get clearing, so temperatures overnight will be in the cold 20s. Winter is back, folks. The year will end on a chilly note.

New Year’s? Maybe snow, maybe no. Extended models are still at odds trying to figure out the longer range picture. Lots of cold air will be to our north, so that bears watching.

Have a joyous Christmas Day.
