Letter: Fortunate coverage obtainable

The Columbian
Published: December 26, 2014, 4:00pm

Last year, after the holidays, I signed up for Obamacare. It wasn’t easy, but nothing a quick phone call couldn’t clear up. My insurance company sent me a notice to schedule a “preventative appointment.” During that appointment, my doctor found a lump in my breast. After that I had a mammogram, ultrasound and a biopsy. It was cancer. Then a CT scan, oncologist, surgeon appointments, eight sessions of chemo, two surgeries, 16 double radiation treatments and I will see my oncologist for five years.

So far my insurance has paid everything but my deductible of $5,250. I’m pretty sure it was because the tumor was found in the preventative appointment. Cancer is hard enough without having to deal with financial obligations. So far, it’s run up past $122,000. I feel extremely lucky and so glad I got the Affordable Care Act insurance when I did.
