Longshoremen donate bikes to children who’ve already lost enough

Esther Short — The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 4, whose members work at the Port of Vancouver and elsewhere, donated more than 100 bicycles to the Children’s Justice Center this holiday season.

That makes seven years in a row the Longshoremen have provided bikes for needy kids through the Children’s Justice Center.

“Some are in foster care and have left behind all their personal belongings, including their bike. For a child, this loss adds to a stack of big losses,” said Mary Blanchette, executive director of CJC. “Our local Longshoremen have helped to make an important difference in the lives of hundreds of abused children over the holidays for many years now.”
