As we all know, the National “Security” Agency has been secretly spying on nearly all the communications of American citizens for at least eight years. They hid this from us, lied to Congress and refuse to be held accountable. The president and Congress intend to heal this massive wound in our republic with a tiny Band-Aid: tiny, cosmetic changes that would allow the National Surveillance Agency (its more appropriate title) to continue its programs unhindered. It’s time to put an end to this.
A bipartisan bill was introduced to the Washington state House of Representatives to do just that. House Bill 2272 would forbid Washington state from giving any material support to the NSA in its spying efforts. It is based on the solid, Supreme Court approved “Anti-Commandeering Principle,” which forbids the federal government from forcing states to help carry out its programs. It basically tells the NSA, “Do your dirty work yourself, Washingtonians will not be a party to unconstitutional, warrantless spying.” It would shut down a NSA listening post in our state — because they can’t spy on us without our help.
