U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, announced Tuesday the first U.S. House STEM App Challenge for high school students. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

High school students nationwide can showcase their ability to create software applications, or apps, for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 77, The Academic Competition Resolution, putting the STEM App Challenge in motion. The winning application from Southwest Washington will be featured on the House of Representatives’ website, House.gov.

• What: The House STEM App Challenge.

• Who: Open to all high school students, grades nine through 12, who either reside or attend school in Southwest Washington’s 3rd Congressional District.

• Deadline: Students must submit their app’s source code online by 9 p.m. April 30 and provide a YouTube video demonstration explaining their app and what they learned through the competition process.

• Details: Call Herrera Beutler’s office at 360-695-6292 or visit http://herrerabeutler.house.gov.
