I was much impressed with the Feb. 10 story, “Restaurant inspections check for problems, with a goal of zero” about the job as a food safety specialist that Joan Lacey does for the Clark County Public Health department. So many people take for granted that they can go to a restaurant and never give a thought as to how safe it is to eat the food that is served.
My wife and I recently were in a city in California, and we popped into a well-known fast-food restaurant to have a bite. There was one item that we shared at that meal. Within 10 hours of that meal, we were both sick with all the symptoms of food poisoning. My wife was in such distress that I couldn’t transport her to the hospital.
I placed two calls to the restaurant, with no return call.
I placed a call to that county’s health department, and the response I got was “sorry.”
For those of us who have worked in the food industry, we salute Lacey and her department, and we should all respect the work that the public health department is doing for us.
