Letter: Crime & punishment gap widening

The Columbian
Published: February 18, 2014, 4:00pm

I have to wonder how Gov. Jay Inslee would feel about the death penalty if were one of his children or grandchildren were harmed or murdered. By setting a moratorium on use of the death penalty in Washington state, it would seem Inslee’s oath to uphold the law means the law as he likes it. It’s a common ailment for politicians these days.

I do, however, have cost-saving suggestions. First, set the rate paid to and number of hours allowed billable by the defense counsel. Next, set a limit of only one appeal paid for by the public dime. Any other appeals would be paid by the defendant. Limit the time allowed to rule on the appeal. This will get inmates off death row faster. Finally, make all crime committed with a weapon and all child molestation crimes have mandatory sentencing of capital punishment.

It’s time to get back to the days when crime was punished.
