State Championship Weekend Preview

Wrestling

Where: Tacoma Dome

Schedule: Friday — First session, 10 a.m.; second session, 4 p.m.; Saturday — Third session, 10 a.m.; championship matches, 5 p.m.

Outlook: Union is the top-ranked team in Class 4A and has its sights set on a team championship. The Titans are led by Junior Godinho (132), Tommy Strassenberg (138), Jeremiah Reynolds (152), Michael Snedeker (160), Alex Berfanger (170) and Cody Gromes (195). Other highly-ranked local wrestlers include Austin Wright of Evergreen (4A-285), Kenji Yamashita of Mountain View (3A-138), Gunnar Metzger of Hudson’s Bay (3A-152), Grant Gaspar of Ridgefield (2A-120) and Tyler Miller of Stevenson (1A-138).

Gymnastics

Where: Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall

Schedule: Friday — 3A/2A/1A individual rotations 9:15 a.m.; 3A/2A/1A team rotations 1:30 p.m.; 4A team/individual rotations 6:35 p.m. Saturday — Individual apparatus finals 11:20 a.m.

Outlook: The Columbia River team makes its 17th consecutive appearance to the state championships. Prairie’s Lindsey Willis, Mountain View’s Megan Clark and Ridgefield’s Tjensvold will compete for all-around honors in 3A/2A/1A. Heritage’s Nicole Moss and Union’s Jamie Nolta are competitors in the all-around in 4A. Moss placed third in the 4A all-around last year. She also won a state title on the uneven bars and placed third in both the vault and balance beam. No local team qualified in the 4A meet.

Boys swimming

Where: King County Aquatic Center, Federal Way

Schedule: Friday — 4A preliminaries 9:45 a.m.; 2A preliminaries 2:30 p.m.; 3A preliminaries 6:15 p.m. Saturday — 4A finals 10 a.m.; 2A finals 2:30 p.m.; 3A finals, 6:30 p.m.

Outlook: With three indivuals (Jonah Rodewald, Dylan Osborne and Cullyn Newman) seeded in the top eight in six events and three relays also seeded high, Hockinson is looking for a high team finish in the 2A meet. In the 3A meet, Prairie’s Jaron Hamlik is seeded No. 3 in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Columbia River’s Benjamin Grubb and Mountain View’s Chris Xue are seeded in the top eight. In the 4A meet, Camas’ Kasey Calwell and John Utas are positioned to reach the championship finals.
