ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves left the Winter Classic in the first period after being cross-checked up high by Toronto’s Joffrey Lupul.

Eaves crumpled to the ice Wednesday and eventually made his way back to the locker room. He’s had concussion problems in his career and also broke his jaw in November 2011. This injury was announced as an upper-body injury, and Eaves is questionable to return against the Maple Leafs.

Lupul was given a minor penalty on the play. He was suspended two games last season for an illegal hit to the head.

Eaves has played in 10 games this season for the Red Wings.
