Ashes blamed for condo fire

Improperly discarded fireplace ashes were apparently to blame for a small fire Monday afternoon at the Ironwood Condominiums, 504 S.E. 157th Ave.

The fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. by a neighbor who heard a smoke detector sounding in Unit 53, according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

When Vancouver firefighters arrived and entered the two-story condominium unit, they found a small fire in the living room. Firefighters from Engine 10 quickly extinguished the flames and opened the windows to ventilate the smoke.

Property records show that unit is owned by a Vancouver investment company.
