Colorado State nips San Jose State 66-64

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — J.J. Avila scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Colorado State over San Jose State 66-64 on Wednesday night as the Rams notched their first Mountain West Conference victory of the season.

Isaac Thornton sank a 3-pointer on his only field-goal attempt with 1:35 left to give SJSU its first lead in nearly 10 minutes. But Avila went 6 for 6 from the line and Daniel Bejarano 2 of 4 in the final 1:20 for the win.

SJSU’s Rashad Muhammad tripped over a defender’s feet and was unable to get a final shot off.

Bejarano added 15 points and Joe De Ciman 13 for CSU (10-6, 1-2). The Rams scored 21 points off 19 Spartans turnovers in a game where the lead changed 16 times.

Muhammad tied his season high with 28 points for SJSU (6-9, 0-3). Chris Cunningham added 13 points and Jaleel Williams 11.
