HONOLULU (AP) — Hideki Matsuyama has withdrawn from the Sony Open because of a wrist injury.

Matsuyama, the first rookie to win the Japan Golf Tour money title, was playing for the first time since he won the Casio World Open in Japan. He played the pro-am at Waialae Country Club on Wednesday, and then pulled out with soreness in his wrist.

He was the sixth-highest ranked player in the field at No. 23 in the world.

Matsuyama had said his wrist was getting better, but that he had not been able to practice much going into the first full-field event of the year on the PGA Tour.

He was replaced in the Sony Open by Robert Streb.
