Albany outlasts UMBC 73-72 in double overtime

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (AP) — John Puk made the game-winning free throw in the second overtime on Wednesday night to give Albany a 73-72 win against Maryland-Baltimore County.

Malik Garner fouled Puk on a defensive rebound with 0.4 seconds left. Puk made the first and missed the second on purpose, but committed a lane violation. UMBC was unable to get a shot off in the final tenths of a second.

Peter Hooley sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left in regulation for Albany (8-7, 2-0 America East). Hooley scored 27 and Sam Rowley added 20 with 12 rebounds.

UMBC took possession with 36 seconds left and the game tied at 72. The Retrievers held the ball until Chase Plummer’s missed 3-pointer was gathered by Puk with 2 seconds left.

UMBC (4-11, 0-2) also missed a 3-pointer at the end of first overtime. Rodney Elliott scored 22 to lead the Retrievers.
