Winterhawks beat Giants in shootout

The Portland Winterhawks wrapped up a four-game Western Hockey League road trip with a 5-4 shootout win at Vancouver on Sunday against the Giants.

Portland’s Adam de Champlain got behind the defense while Vancouver was on the power play and scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 4-4 at 17:19 of the third period.

Neither team scored in overtime, setting up a shootout.

Portland goalie Corbin Boes stopped Cain Franson on Vancouver’s first attempt, and Derrick Pouliot scored as the Hawks took a 1-0 lead after the first round. Boes then slammed the door on Volek in the second round, and Taylor Leier scored the winner.

Chase De Leo had a goal and an assist for Portland (28-12-2-3). It was his 26th goal of the season.

Alex Schoenborn and Paul Bittner also scored goals for the Winterhawks.
