Baron’s 29 lead Canisius to 85-83 win over Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) — Billy Baron scored 29 points and Canisius squandered a 20-point lead on Friday night, but battled past Iona 85-83.

Iona had the ball with 18 seconds left and the scored tied at 83 when Baron intercepted a careless pass over the middle, drove the length of the court and drew a foul on his attempted layup.

Baron made both free throws, and Sean Armand missed a last-second attempt to win the game for Iona with a 3-pointer.

Baron also had eight assists and eclipsed 1,000 points during his Canisius career.

Canisius (12-6, 6-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) built its biggest lead at 61-41 before Iona rattled off 11 straight points. The Griffins built their lead back to 15, and then Iona went on an 18-0 run to go in front 74-71.

Armand led Iona (8-8, 5-2) with 19 points with A.J. English and Isaiah Williams adding 18 and 17, respectively.
