Letter: Support Tesoro-Savage

The Columbian
Published: January 18, 2014, 4:00pm

We’re disappointed The Columbian took a position on Tesoro-Savage’s Energy Distribution Terminal at the Port of Vancouver so early in EFSEC’s review and without meeting with us.

Vancouver, which I’m proud to call home, has a robust port and beautiful waterfront that can co-exist and attract new investment. Our community doesn’t need to choose between a century of industry and new commercial/residential development; it’s short-sighted to suggest so.

The terminal’s economic impact will be significant, while minimally increasing rail traffic, with:

• 470 temporary and permanent living-wage jobs, predominantly sourced locally, plus support for thousands of local and regional jobs in railroad, port and marine operations, refining, trucking, aviation and other businesses.

• Over 10 years, millions of dollars from city, county and state taxes paid by Tesoro-Savage, plus hundreds of millions in fees and lease payments to the port.

Tesoro, a longtime port tenant, and Savage, named a top 10 safest company in America by safety magazine EHS Today, have reflected our commitment to safety and environmental responsibility in our 850-page EFSEC application. We stand ready to discuss additional measures that EFSEC, Gov. Jay Inslee or federal agencies feel are necessary for safe transportation and handling of crude oil.

As Tesoro-Savage’s general manager, I look forward to continued dialogue with residents and businesses.
