WASHINGTON (AP) — Darius Gardner had 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists Saturday to lead American to its seventh consecutive win in a 66-61 victory against Lafayette.

American (10-7, 6-0 Patriot League) was defending a 63-61 lead with 27 seconds left, when Lafayette’s Nick Lindner attempted a crosscourt pass under the basket — which Jesse Reed intercepted.

Reed found Gardner for the outlet, and Gardner advanced the ball a streaking Kyle Kager, who slipped behind the defense for an uncontested layup only 4 seconds after the steal. Lafayette immediately turned the ball over on the next inbounds pass and never challenged again.

John Schoof led American with 16 points, while Reed and Tony Wroblicky scored 11 apiece.

Bryce Scott scored 15 to lead Layayette (4-13, 0-6) which led by as much as six points in the second half and was up 61-59 with on Lindner’s layup with 2:00 to play.
