Letter: Tolls can be beneficial

The Columbian
Published: January 18, 2014, 4:00pm

Tolls on the proposed new bridge aren’t mentioned in a positive way in our newspaper.

The “Leadership of Clark County,” a group of mostly 25- to 40-year-old young professionals, found a while ago, after much study, a new bridge funded by a toll system is highly desirable for the county.

We raised two children and I had a career of teaching after retiring from about 25 years in research and found that people do better with some kind of natural feedback that a regressive tax lacks. Tolls are the only funding system that provides feedback that says if you enjoy easy transportation then you must be willing to pay.

We’d rather have our local newspaper educate us than reports from the Oregon Legislature. Why not have some local education about infrastructure, social contracts, and business rather than hoping and advertising for some free lunch system funded by some regressive tax?
