Nebraska-Omaha defeats South Dakota State 80-71

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — Marcus Tyus scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half as Nebraska-Omaha rolled to an 80-71 victory Saturday over South Dakota State.

Tyus scored Nebraska-Omaha’s first seven points to give the Mavericks a 7-6 lead, and they led the rest of the way. South Dakota State could only pull within four points, 48-44 with 13:02 remaining. Nebraska-Omaha had an 11-point lead twice in the second half.

CJ Carter scored eight of his 15 points from the line with less than a minute to play for Nebraska-Omaha (11-7, 1-2 Summit League). Justin Simmons scored 12 points for the Mavericks. John Karhoff added 11.

Brayden Carlson made 12 of 12 free throws on his way to a career-high 26 points to lead South Dakota State (10-9, 2-2). Carlson was 2 of 3 from 3-point range, but the Jackrabbits shot just 3 of 19 from beyond the arc.
