Hampton holds off Savannah State 80-71

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Du’Vaughn Maxwell scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Hampton over Savannah State 80-71 on Saturday.

Hampton (9-10, 4-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak and ended Savannah State’s five-game winning streak in the process.

The Pirates slowly built on a two-point halftime advantage, leading by as many as 11 in the second half.

Savannah State (7-13, 5-1) narrowed the deficit to 76-71 on a 3-pointer from Jeremiah Hill with 38 seconds left, but Breon Key went 4 of 4 from the free throw line over the final 31 seconds as Hampton held on for the win.

Brian Darden added 17 points for the Pirates and Key had 14.

Hill led the Tigers with 15 and Khiry White added 11. Jyles Smith and Alante Fenner contributed 10 apiece.

Hampton beat Savannah State for the third consecutive time, and improved to 5-1 all-time against the Tigers.
