SEATTLE — Ridership on Washington State ferries rose 1.5 percent last year, compared with the year before.

The 22.5 million riders are the most since 2009.

The Kitsap Sun reports the growth was in non-commuters. Commuter use declined.

Vehicle traffic in the San Juan Islands was the highest it’s been in a decade.

The Bainbridge Island-Seattle route remains the busiest run on Puget Sound, with more than 6 million riders last year.
