Oregon keeps eye on Calif. fishing closures

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Oregon has no plans to follow California’s lead in closing dozens of streams to fishing because of shallow water levels.

California officials took action after the streams dipped below minimum flows, forcing already depressed native winter steelhead runs to migrate and spawn amid drought conditions.

Steve Mazur is the assistant Gold Beach District fish biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. He tells the Mail Tribune (http://is.gd/UNdWIN ) that southern Oregon streams such as the Chetco River have run low for much of the winter, but there has been enough rain to keep water levels up and native steelhead moving.
