The city of Kalama and the Port of Kalama have won recognition in the 2014 Smart Communities Awards for their collaboration on annexation of 260 acres of port property for business and recreational purposes. The annexation will make way for the Spencer Creek Business Park and a new recreational facility, Haydu Park, including the Kalama fairgrounds.

Gov. Jay Inslee announced this year’s 12 award winners. The Kalama project, the only Southwest Washington winner, was one of four in the category called “Smart Choices Award — Implementation of a Comprehensive Plan.”

In their collaboration, the port and the city worked together to write new city code that will enable flexible development, while providing predictable quality of infrastructure, landscaping and buildings. The Spencer Creek Business Park will encompass about 70 acres and over 500,000 square feet of space when fully developed.
