Fire from a propane barbecue caught a house on fire in Battle Ground on Wednesday night.

A family had been barbecuing chicken on a grill too close to the house, said Battalion Chief Tim Dawdy of Clark County Fire & Rescue. The fire was reported at 8:16 p.m. at 2114 S.E. Second Ave. Although the flames ran up the side of the house, the homeowner was able to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose before firefighters arrived.

When the weather is wetter, people might be able to barbecue close to the house, but Dawdy said that it’s too dry now.

“This is the time of year that we really have to be careful with open flames,” Dawdy said. “Right now we’re in a critical time where a recreational fire can (spread).”

Firefighters with CCF&R and Fire District 3 checked the attic space for additional fire and ventilated the house.

“I think the house owner learned a good lesson here tonight,” he said.
