Letter: Moderation balances 3rd District

The Columbian
Published: July 20, 2014, 12:00am

The Columbian was wrongly ridiculed in Vivian E. van Dijk’s July 13 letter, “Not satisfied with job performance.” The newspaper is quite balanced politically.

I have never met or talked to Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, but am interested in her thoughts, actions and votes. She receives federal health care because many voters elected her to office. Her child shouldn’t be mentioned when attacking her viewpoints.

Her votes were against an expensive and rushed Affordable Care Act that may do the country more harm than good, even if there is an eventual need for a good plan. History will tell. That rushed act alone hurt our country grievously by pushing liberals/progressives, conservatives, Democrats and Republicans much farther apart, avoiding moderates on both sides. If only Obama had championed more pressing problems such as unemployment and growth, he could have brought all sides closer together.

Herrera Beutler may avoid town hall meetings because people with extreme viewpoints try to take over the meetings. She is still quite approachable and receptive to opposing views.

Saying she is one of the worst members of Congress is ridiculous. She is a moderate thinker with human flaws and growing experience, trying to balance the needs of this great country and her constituents while under the huge pressures of her party, the press, special interests and voters from moderate to extreme.
