Letter: PACs, not people, represented

The Columbian
Published: July 28, 2014, 12:00am

I could not believe Harold Lay’s July 24 letter, “Herrera Beutler represents people.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, is a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC is a nonprofit 501(c) political organization). She is a member and has taken money from the Republican Main Street PAC, as well as others. In fact, according to Opensecrets.org, 83 percent of her contributions are either PAC donations or large individual donors. In fact, Herrera Beutler represents many of the corporations funding ALEC, the corporations whose PACs contributed to her campaign, and the Republican Party.

None of them are people in the way that the people of the 3rd Legislative District are people.
