Letter: Shoot nuclear waste far into galaxy

The Columbian
Published: June 3, 2014, 5:00pm

I’m writing concerning the May 25 editorial “Wasteful approach: Federal government for too long has stalled on dealing with nuclear waste.” I don’t understand why playing a shell game by moving the toxic waste from one location to another solves anything when you consider the radioactive stuff has a half-life of hundreds of millennia. It seems to me that a better solution would be to commission our private rocket companies and NASA to dump the stuff into the sun. Whatever the risk and cost might be, it could not be as great as keeping it anywhere here on Earth.

Additionally, I wonder why we can’t handle all toxic waste in this way, with those responsible for producing it footing the bill. This would probably have the effect of reducing it since it would, presumably, be cheaper than paying for its disposal.

Since We the People were responsible for the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, we should pay for that.
