Letter: Protect our birds to reverse decline

The Columbian
Published: June 4, 2014, 5:00pm

Spring is finally here, and with it, the sounds of birds are everywhere. All species of birds are nesting, and after a short time, these young nestlings will become fledglings, leave the nest and be on the ground. The fledging stage for birds is an important seven to 14 days on the ground to learn how to be a bird, to find food, to learn how to fly. Fledglings are the “pre-teens” and this is a very vulnerable time, particularly due to the alarming number of domestic cats let outside.

A documented decline in the songbird population in the Southwest Washington/Portland area has been attributed to domestic and feral cats. Responsible cat owners should keep their cats inside. If you are unwilling or unable to keep cats inside, consider a screened-in “catio,” it’s actually better for the long-term health of your cat and you can do your part to help protect our local wildlife.
